Description

Intergenerational connections are interactions and exchanges between individuals from different age groups. Individuals of all ages who experience these connections often yield several mental health benefits as a result of their participation. Structured intergenerational programs are typically designed to facilitate these connections, though these programs vary significantly in design. Older men participate in social programming less often than older women despite program benefits. This is likely due to gendered marketing practices and norms around masculinity. Older men residing in rural areas face additional barriers, including limited access to formal support services. The primary purpose of this literature review is to explore programs that foster intergenerational connections and analyze the impacts these relationships have on older individuals using research conducted over the past ten years. How programs can better meet the needs of older men, particularly in rural communities, will be emphasized.
