Description

Social media has grown in importance for many different aspects of life. For the arts as a whole, it has been used to promote and document different stages of an artistic piece. For dance, however, not only is social media being used to show the physical aspect of the movement, but also who is doing the activity. There are many different styles of dance, and the personality that shows through the movement significantly impacts how a viewer experiences and interprets the performance. When casting for specific jobs such as music videos or background dancers, casting managers look for dancers that visually excel in the style of the piece. Social media allows for a direct window of connection on how dancers practice and show off their individuality in dance. I am specifically looking at the group of background dancers selected by j-hope for his “Killin’ It Girl” project, because it includes both professional and non-professional dancers, chosen based on their social presence. I will compare their social media content to their work on j-hope’s project. In particular I will analyse behind the scenes clips where j-hope articulates his choices about performers. Through recent modern day examples and analysis, I intend to show how social media is being utilized to connect dancers that most fit the individuality required for various projects and jobs, using the social media platforms Instagram and Tik Tok.
