Abstract

Familial roles, household work distribution, and opinions concerning the operation of a household have been a popular topic of discussion within recent years. Many people push for fathers and mothers to take on equal amounts of housework and childcare duties, but previous research suggests that this often fails to happen. This paper uses 2022 survey data to investigate how demographic characteristics can predict who does the chores in the home, and how an individual believes a home should operate. Chi-Square tests, Fisher’s Exact tests, and logistic regression models show evidence that sex does still influence who is responsible for household chores related to childcare, as well as opinions on if a mother should work in or outside the home. However, no evidence was found that any other demographic variables influence these decisions. Recognizing and understanding these trends is important because it sheds light on how mothers and their responsibilities are perceived by the greater American public. Additionally, researchers have found that this second shift, or the extra unpaid childcare and housework, expected from mothers is linked to an increase in parental burnout, as well as anxiety.
